Rule From the Shadows

Kings are visible and therefore replaceable. You are not a king.

You run a secret cabal in the thirteenth century, and the nations do your work without knowing whose work it is.

Wars get fought and Crusades get preached, and every one of them can be turned to your account across Europe, the East and North Africa. The trouble is that the other cabals are doing the same thing to you, with assassinations, papal manoeuvres, spies and armies, and none of you can see the others clearly.

What a Turn Looks Like

Play action cards, some of which you have no choice about and which may wreck your own plan as easily as anyone else's. Collect income, which scales with the provinces you hold. Attack with armies, fleets and deception. Then manipulate events, which is where you release the plague, excommunicate somebody inconvenient, or accuse a rival of heresy.

The Mongols End It

The seventh Mongol invasion brings the world down, and whoever holds the most provinces and influence at that moment has won. Until then the invasion is just another thing to aim at somebody.

New in the Second Edition

A mounted map replaces the original card-based board, the rules have been streamlined for faster play, and there are proper rules for one, two and six players.

Everything you need is in the box. Medieval is a complete game of conspiracy and conquest from HGN Games, and no other product is required to play it.
