“Prefer to play online or don’t have room for a physical table? Download the free VASSAL engine. Load the appropriate LnLP module (maps, counters, overlays) and gather a friend or play by email for a full virtual wargame experience. You still need the official LnL rulebook or scenario files, but VASSAL gives you the table and pieces anywhere you have a computer.”
Play LnLP Games Online with Vassal
Vassal Engine is a free, cross-platform virtual tabletop designed specifically for board games and wargames. It allows players to play their favorite tabletop games online in real time, or asynchronously using play-by-email. It runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux and is completely free to use.
LnLP supports digital play through community-built and publisher-approved Vassal modules. These modules digitally recreate Lock ’n Load game maps, counters, and components so players can enjoy complete tactical gameplay even when they cannot meet at the same table.
How Vassal Works with LnLP
Vassal itself is only the game engine. The actual Lock ’n Load games are played using game modules, which contain the digital maps, counters, and tools needed to play. These modules act as a virtual tabletop. You still use the official LnLP game rules to play. Vassal handles the map, pieces, movement, and game state.
This system allows:
- Real-time online play with live opponents
- Asynchronous play using PBEM (Play by Email)
- Easy solo play and scenario testing
- No physical table space required
- No physical setup time between sessions
Vassal does not enforce rules automatically. It is a digital board, not an AI referee. Players must already know the LnLP game rules to play correctly.
Quick Start Guide for Players
- Download and install the free Vassal Engine from the official VASSAL website.
- Download the desired LnLP Vassal module.
- Launch Vassal and load the module.
- Open a new game or saved file.
- Play live online, solo, or using Play-By-Email.
You must own the official LnLP rulebooks and scenarios separately to play correctly.
