The Eastern Front was fought on ground with nothing on it for miles, and then in cities with nothing left standing. Both are bad places to be in a tank.

Take the Soviets or take the Germans, and find out which problem you would rather have.

The German commander has better crews, better guns and not enough of either. Panzer IVs do the work, Tigers are nearly untouchable from the front and slow enough that it matters, StuG IIIs wait in ambush and Panzerfaust teams handle whatever gets close. The Soviet commander has T-34s in numbers, KV-1s to lead with, SU-76s and SU-85s hunting at range, and artillery heavy enough to take a defensive line apart before anybody drives into it.

Never the Same Turn Twice

Each turn gives you a variable number of actions, so you plan for what you might get rather than what you want. One action short at the wrong moment is usually the whole game.

Ground and Weather

Open steppe rewards speed and firepower. Forests force armour into close range. Hills give you the sight lines. Rivers and bridges are where an advance either works or stops. And optional winter rules bring ice, snow and mud, which change what a tank can do before anybody fires a shot.
