Summer Lightning: The Invasion of Poland 1939 places you in command during the opening campaign of World War II in Europe. In September 1939, German forces launched a rapid invasion of Poland, beginning a conflict that reshaped the world. This operational-level wargame recreates the tense opening weeks of the campaign, where maneuver, command decisions, and operational timing determined the fate of a nation.
Designed by veteran game designer Brian Train, Summer Lightning presents a detailed yet streamlined simulation of the Polish campaign. Each turn represents two days of operations across a map of Poland and the surrounding regions. Players command divisions, corps, and headquarters formations as they maneuver across a hex-based map where every hex represents roughly thirty kilometers of terrain.
One player commands the Axis forces, directing German and Slovak formations as they drive toward Warsaw and other key objectives. The opposing player commands the Polish Army and must delay, disrupt, and, where possible, counterattack while preserving forces and holding strategic cities. As the campaign progresses, the Soviet Union may enter the conflict from the east, adding pressure and forcing the Polish player to fight on multiple fronts.
Summer Lightning uses a dynamic command-and-activation system built around headquarters units. Each turn, players draw HQ activation chits, which determine which formations conduct operations. Units move, attack, and exploit breakthroughs under the command of their HQ, reflecting the real command limitations and operational tempo of the campaign.
Combat uses a mission-selection system in which attackers and defenders secretly choose operational approaches. The interaction of these missions determines advances, retreats, and casualty checks, creating fluid battlefield outcomes that reflect maneuver warfare rather than simple odds calculations.
Air superiority, weather conditions, supply lines, and operational planning all influence the course of the campaign. Axis air power supports ground offensives, weather shifts influence air operations, and supply determines whether units maintain combat effectiveness. Optional rules and historical variations allow players to explore alternate outcomes such as different Polish mobilization levels, stronger foreign reactions, or changes in Soviet involvement.
